SLO 6. The student applies appropriate technology for effective information services.

This is an SLO I honestly struggle with. I am not always up to speed on the most current technology. Thankfully through the program, I have been given opportunities to work with makers in residence, collaborate with other students, and have been given great feedback from professors. LIS 635 was instrumental in getting the technology wheels turning. During this course, Professor Martin introduced me to infographics, screencast, and so much more! For the digital curation assignment, I had to evaluate different platforms to decide which one was the best place to house my curation. Once the curation was completed I had to use a screen-cast to record the flipped part of my flipped instruction lesson. Then I housed all of the parts to this assignment in a Google Classroom. The assignment as a whole relied heavily on utilizing technology for instruction.

In LIS 654 I had to work with my group to create a maker space lesson. During this lesson, I had trouble integrating technology. Our wonderful maker in residence suggests we use Aurasma to have the students create interactive portions to their projects. During this course, I also created a Collaborative lesson with our fifth-grade teachers. The lesson used green screen technology and vMix software to turn our fifth graders into meteorologist who delivered the national weather forecast using premade weather maps. In the future, I would love to have the student create their own interactive weather maps based on collected data trends for the time and use those for the forecast.

While in a course for assistive technology I was asked to choose a device or form of technology assistance for special needs students. I chose to use the Join Me app. This app allows the student to share the teacher’s computer screen with a device that they are better able to see. This technology will greatly enhance the ability for students who suffer from visual impairment by allowing them to easily see what the teacher is doing in a demonstration setting and help them better follow along if notes are being given.

On several occasions during the program I have been asked to build a website In LIS 600, 610, 693, and 698 a website has been a required assignment. In LIS 600 I created the website that houses my capstone project and during LIS 68 I have added the contents of the capstone to it. I also added the hallmark project to it in LIS 693. The chosen platform for this website was WordPress.  In LIS 610 I was asked to build a website with my group to house our collections. For this assignment, I was given the opportunity to navigate Google Sites. Both of these experiences have helped me better understand and utilize technology.

During the program, there have been countless other assignments that have required me to implement the technology. Knowing which type of technology to utilize is critical to reaching the students. So much of what the students interact with is technology-based, from coding to simple assignments place in a Google classroom almost everything the students of today do is technology based. Finding engaging ways to implement technology and integrate it into teaching strategies is one-way school librarians can stay relevant.
